Orchids

Kalapana Tropicals has been growing certified orchid plants for export since 1993 (the first 6 years we grew Dendrobium and Oncidium for Cut Flowers only). Our two farms provide us with us two different growing conditions which allows us to grow a wide variety of orchid genus including the following;

In Kalapana at aproximatley 200 feet in elevation (average year round Temperature 65-95 degrees) we grow;

  • Dendrobium
  • Cattleya
  • Epidendrum
  • Vanda and Ascocenda

In Kurtistown at 900 feet in elevation (average year round Temperature 60-85 degrees) we grow;

  • Oncidium
  • Intergeneric Oncidinae (Beallara, Burrgeara, Brassidium, Brasada,Colmanara,Degarmoara, Miltonidium, Miltassia, Odontonia, Odontobrassia,Odontocidium, Rehfieldara,Vuylstekeara,Wilsonara,)
  • Miltoniopsis
  • Zygopetalum
  • Paphiopedalum
  • Masdavallia
  • Encyclia
  • Cooler growing Vandas

85 percent of all plants are grown from flask within our nursery. We do bring in some stock in plug size where we plant directly into a 4”pot. Most plants spend aproximately 8-12 months in a liner and then 10-20 months in a 4” pot before we can sell them as a spiked or blooming orchid plants.

We  primarily grow mericloned hybrids that we have had  produced on our behalf in labs in Thailand. We have been working with them since 1991 and have found their quality and efficiency to be absolutely superb. On average we receive about 80,000 plants a year from our own cloning program. All plants are virus tested before they are submitted to the lab and again once they have been returned to us.

We pride ourselves on growing well established, well rooted plants with beautiful foliage in 4” pots( black plastic grower pot) that can easily be repotted into a 6” clay or decorative pot. All plants are tagged with complete botanically correct plant name and planting dates.
